Standalone Level Crossings
At this kind of crossing, Axle Counters are suitable for bi-directional train travelling also,
since they can deliver SIL4 direction output and further information like speed information
of approaching trains.
Axle Counters can replace existing gates based on treadle functionality and thereby
reduce the closing time of the gate for a higher availability to road users. It is easy to
overlay existing gates with track circuits by a one-to-one replacement of the TC with AC,
following a shadow mode operation to check reliability before switching over.
A further advantage is the use of remote diagnostics to check system health and thereby
reducing mean time to repair (MTTR).
Station Area or Multiple Level Crossings between two stations
Here, AC technology convinces additionally with its flexibility of centralized and distributed
architecture. Remote detection points can be connected to one centralized unit and the
gate information can be passed on to either side of the station IXL/Controller by remote
IO.
Block Application
In addition to track vacancy report, Axle Counters can make available additional data like
the direction of trains. For railway block application, this is especially important on single
lines which still dominate the Thai railway network. The AC solutions can be connected
over a networked environment (using optical fibre, copper cable or radio) and vital I/O data
(for example Line Grant, Train on Line and direction of train travelling) can be exchange
between two stations. Also, with AC virtually infinite section length can be realized while
using less hardware compared to TC.
Yard Applications
Thailand wants to shift passenger and freight traffic from road to rail, to make mobility
more cost-effective, efficient and environmental friendly. Modern yards are an important
component to achieve this goal. Axle Counters can be used for several functions in yards:
From reception and dispatch yards to berthing sections and dead end sections.
Conclusion
This article has shown how Axle Counters can be a convincing solution to update problematic
track sections in train detection. We’ve also demonstrated that AC have a better a performance
compared to track circuits in terms of life cycle costs, safety, availability and flexibility. Finally,
they have shown the potential as an important contribution to the modernization and the further
development of railways in Thailand.
